Andhra Pradesh is on the verge of a major shift in how the state connects to the world. The new greenfield international airport at Bhogapuram, named after freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, is being readied for its formal opening, and once it begins commercial flights it will take over the passenger traffic currently handled at Visakhapatnam.
The airport, built roughly 40 kilometres from Visakhapatnam, has already received its aerodrome licence from the civil aviation regulator, clearing one of the last technical hurdles before flights can begin. State officials have described the project as a turning point for the north coastal districts, which have long relied on the older, space-constrained Visakhapatnam airport that shares its runway with a naval base.
Why the switch matters
The Visakhapatnam airport has struggled for years with limited room to expand. Its shared military runway caps the number of civilian flights and leaves little space for new terminals or parking bays. Bhogapuram, by contrast, has been planned as a dedicated civilian facility with room to grow in phases, a longer runway able to handle wide-body aircraft, and space for cargo operations that the region’s exporters have wanted for a long time.
The government expects the new airport to anchor a wider development zone around it, with hotels, logistics parks and an aerotropolis-style cluster of businesses drawn to the connectivity. For a state that lost its established capital infrastructure after bifurcation, a modern international gateway in the north is being pitched as both an economic and a symbolic gain.
What travellers can expect
For passengers, the most immediate change will be the address. Once operations transfer, flights that today land at Visakhapatnam will instead use Bhogapuram, meaning a longer road journey for many city residents but access to a larger, newer terminal. Authorities have said they are working on improved road links and public transport to smooth the transition.
The Chief Minister has personally pushed for a high-profile inauguration and has invited the Prime Minister to do the honours, underlining how much political weight the project carries. If the timeline holds, the region will soon have one of the more modern airports in southern India, and the older facility will step back from commercial duty after decades of service.
