The Telangana government’s caste survey, one of the largest household enumeration exercises undertaken by any Indian state, covered 1,12,15,134 families — a 96.9% coverage rate — and 3,54,75,554 individuals, with key findings presented in the state legislative assembly.
The headline numbers
Backward Classes account for 56.36% of those surveyed (2,00,37,668 people), including BC Muslims at 10.08%. Scheduled Castes make up 17.42% (61,91,294 people) and Scheduled Tribes 10.43% (37,08,408 people), according to the figures presented by the state government.
How the data was collected
Enumerators used a 57-question questionnaire covering caste, religion, economic status, employment, education and political affiliation. Around 76,000 data-entry operators digitised the responses between November and December 2024, before the findings were compiled and vetted for presentation.
What happens next
The survey data is expected to inform decisions on reservation policy and welfare scheme targeting in Telangana, though the government has not yet made the full underlying dataset public, and some researchers and opposition parties have raised questions about specific sub-category breakdowns. The findings remain a reference point for ongoing debates over caste-based reservation limits in the state.
